Thermal Oils and the Science of Graphene-boosting

Thermal oils facilitate the transfer of thermal energy from a heat source to where it is needed, whilst remaining at atmospheric pressure (or only slightly above). Unfortunately nearly all thermal oils have quite low thermal conductivity and low specific heat. Traditionally these limitations have been compensated for with larger heat exchangers and faster flow rates. Thermal conductivity can be increased by adding a suspension of conductive particles.

Graphene has the highest thermal conductivity known to man. Calx Energetics has developed a process that transfers exfoliated graphene nano-plates into thermal oil, and partial bonding ensures that the graphene remains suspended even when the thermal oil operates at its upper temperature boundary. All this is achieved with an affordable graphene source that ensures the slightly higher cost of this product is easily balanced by the increased thermal performance of the oil, its increased service life, and smaller transfer equipment.

Advantages and Unique Features

Our process of graphene boosting will allow thermal oils to be produced with a ten-fold increase in thermal conductivity and offers advantages such as:-

  • reduction in the size and associated cost of heat exchangers,
  • reduction in the thermal damage caused by localised overheating, as graphene
  • limits boundary-layer burning
  • reduction of pumping loads,
  • increase in maximum possible operating temperatures

All this is achieved with an affordable graphene source that ensures only slightly higher cost of this product, which is easily offset by the increased thermal performance of the oil, its increased service life, and smaller transfer equipment.

Our thermal oil is suitable for use in any application where a thermal oil is currently used. Offering similar features with improved performance features, it can replace existing thermal oils for the efficient collection of heat.
